Why we built it, and why it’s different

Voice-typing apps want another monthly fee. VoiceKey runs on your own OpenAI API key. Typical daily use costs pennies, and you pay OpenAI directly, not us.
■ Custom vocabulary
Teach it your brand names, client names, and domain names once, and it spells them right every time. Generic dictation tools butcher them.
■ Private by design
No account, no VoiceKey server, no transcript history stored anywhere. Push-to-talk means it only listens while you hold the key. No screenshots, no screen reading, no telemetry.

Your words are your business
We built VoiceKey because of a security problem most people never think about. Popular dictation subscriptions route everything through their own servers, and by default most keep a history of everything you have ever dictated and use it to improve their product. If you dictate privileged letters, client matters, or business-critical text, that should bother you. It bothered us.
No account, no VoiceKey server. We never see a word you dictate. There is nothing of yours for us to lose.
No transcript history in anyone’s cloud. Speak, paste, gone.
Transcription runs on OpenAI’s business API tier, which, unlike consumer AI chat apps, is not used to train their models.
It physically cannot listen unless you are holding the key. No screenshots, no screen reading, no telemetry.

Is it really free?
Yes. We built VoiceKey for our own team and give it away as-is. There is no trial, no premium tier, and no credit card. The only cost is your own OpenAI API usage, which is typically pennies for daily dictation.
Why do you need my email?
We send the download link and setup guide by email, and you’ll receive our monthly newsletter with practical AI tips for running a business. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing does not affect your use of VoiceKey.
What is an OpenAI API key and why do I need one?
VoiceKey sends your audio to OpenAI’s transcription service to turn speech into text. Using your own key means you pay OpenAI’s at-cost rates directly instead of paying us a subscription markup. Our setup guide shows you how to create one in about 5 minutes.
Is my audio private?
VoiceKey only records while you physically hold the hotkey. Audio goes directly from your PC to OpenAI’s transcription API under your own key, and the text is typed at your cursor. We never see, store, or transmit your audio or your text, and no transcript history is kept anywhere. There are no screenshots, no keystroke logging, and no analytics in the app.
How is this different from dictation subscription apps?
Subscription dictation services process your audio on their own servers, and most store a history of your transcripts in their cloud by default. Some use your dictation to improve their product unless you find and enable a privacy setting. VoiceKey has no company in the middle: no account, no servers of ours, nothing retained. The only service involved is OpenAI’s business API under your own key, which is not used for model training.
Does it work on Mac?
Not yet. VoiceKey is Windows-only today (Windows 10 and 11).
